Checking Fabricated Steelwork Against the Design

What the Review Covers
Sign-off is a document-and-evidence process, and these are the four areas it usually draws on.
- 01
Fabrication documentation. We compare shop drawings and fabrication records against the approved design to confirm members, connections and dimensions match what was specified. Discrepancies are far cheaper to resolve in the workshop than after delivery.
- 02
Material certificates. Steel grade and section properties have to match what the design assumed, and material certificates are the record of that. We check the certificates trace back to the members actually used rather than to a general supply.
- 03
Welding and bolting records. Weld procedures, welder qualifications and bolt tensioning records show that connections were made the way the design required. These records matter most where a joint is the critical element rather than the member it joins.
- 04
Inspection information. Where inspections took place during fabrication, we review those reports as part of building an overall picture of compliance. Sign-off draws on the evidence available, so the more complete the record, the more straightforward the process.
It confirms that fabricated components have been manufactured in general accordance with the approved engineering design, drawings and specifications. It's a check against documented evidence rather than a guarantee about every individual weld or bolt.
